Next Step - Advanced Cryptography

Scaling and Securing Blockchain TechnologyOver the past 12 Sunday mornings, I attended a Cryptography and Complexity course at the Technion, the Israeli MIT equivalence, delivered by cryptography professor Yuval Ishai, an old friend and one of the smartest people I know. I graduated from this same institute back in 1996 with a bachelor degree in computer science. Going back to school, even if only for a short while, without the pressure of homework, exams and sport classes, and equipped with a clear and focused mission, has been a refreshing experience that I recommend anyone to try.Why am I learning cryptography now? What can be so important? Let me explain. Cryptography has always been an important topic throughout history. Julius Caesar used a simple letter replacement code when sending commands to his troops. Allen Turing almost single-handedly helped the allies defeat Nazi Germany during WWII by breaking the codes produced by the Enigma encryption machine. The American navy surprised the Imperial Japanese fleet at Midway based on an educated guess and the deciphered text of their communications.The advancement of the internet and specifically blockchain technology, has made cryptography all the more important. Recent advancements in this field are mind boggling.Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKP) can prove that some claim is true without revealing what this claim is. A strong tool to protect your privacy.Homomorphic Encryption lets you run a computation on encrypted data without decrypting it first. Sounds like science fiction right?Secure Multiparty Computation allows parties to jointly compute a solution over their private inputs without revealing those inputs to each other.All these technologies are available now. I wanted to know if we can use some of these wonderful tools to continue to improve Ardor and the newly released lightweight contracts to continue our journey to make blockchain technology accessible and mainstream.How can we use these technologies? Here are several examples:Trusted Contract ExecutionAs you recall from my previous articles and talks about lightweight contracts, our contracts are executed by a single node. How can you trust that this node actually executed the contract correctly? We do have some good solutions for this now, but these are off-blockchain solutions, which require parties to take another verification step. Can we use advanced cryptography to improve on this?What if a contract runner could submit the transactions created by running the contract, together with a digital signature which proves to all other nodes that the contract runner has indeed run the exact contract code on the given contract input?Blockchain ScalingExisting blockchain nodes perform a lot of extra computations to increase trust. For example, when a new block is forged and submitted to the network, each node that receives this new block has to re-validate all transactions stored in the block - a time consuming operation. What if we could streamline this validation process by attaching a cryptographic proof to each block that is easier to re-validate?Confidential TokensWhat if instead of storing token balances on the blockchain we will just save a proof of the token balance on the blockchain while each user keeps the information about their token balance to themselves?Secure VotingOur existing voting system allows anyone to track the voting progress before the poll is over and match an account with its vote. Can we use cryptography to support secure voting?All these features can be implemented today using a combination of the advanced cryptographic tools described above. However, the technologies in their current state are still complex and hard to access. The time I spent learning cryptography enables me now to fully understand the potential of these tools.In my upcoming blog posts, I will delve more deeply into cryptographic tools and explain how they can be integrated into Jelurida’s blockchain solutions.

Ardor, smart contract and marketing

Hi, I've been on the Ardor forum, Twitter and Reddit for a few months, but I finally signed up to ask following questions. 1) How is Ardor's lightweight contract different from all the competitors trying to create one or already have one. Please explain to someone who's not a systems engineer. My understanding is it can communicate to the outside world without having to upload the data to the blockchain. For example, if I bet a friend 100 Ardors on Amazon stock price (let's say the friend and I disagree on potential stock price increase by 10% in next two months), it will automatically keep track of the price and execute the contract to whoever is correct? Is this my understanding? I'm guessing ETH only executes contracts with data that's within the blockchain only, is this correct? 2) What is the point of Ignis when you have all these child chains that can also create their own smart contracts? 3) Where is the marketing? I often see the same folks cheering for Ardor on Reddit/Twitter/etc. Why isn't Jelurida backing those who are motivated to increase value of their own bag. I remember when this guy named "Zark" went all out before Ardor went live (saying how NXT is great and all -- he/she scammed a lot of people by selling them at the top). It's always the community members who are often making posts, and they are all driven/motivated by their own greed (absolutely nothing's wrong with it). 4) How come some of the projects have increased by 100% or more in past three months and Ardor remains one of the lowest performing currency? With all the excitement and news, there's no reaction in the market. How are we supposed to invest in the currency that the developers don't care or are incompetent to market their products?

No block activity?

I see empty blocks logging every minute at [https://ardor.tools/](https://ardor.tools/) I also noticed the same miner IDs mining 1/3 and 1/4 of the blocks. I own 0.00000037 of the circulating supply and think today's market cap is about right. I have little value and am in no hurry to sell. I first bought my NXT about 1.5 years ago and got ARDOR then Ignis as they were formed. If I check back on Ardor in 6 months, will the blockchain explorer activity look much different? I hope Ardor isn't trying to be the Ferrari or Porsche with features galore. I don't see those brands in my neighborhood or on my freeways. Toyota has 10x the market cap of those companies. Right now Ardor is 1/40th the market cap of Litecoin. Ardor already has way more features than Litecoin and even more planned. When I look at today's blockchain activity of Litecoin, [http://explorer.litecoin.net/chain/Litecoin](http://explorer.litecoin.net/chain/Litecoin) I see each block transfers about 100x the block reward in value. I see an average of 15 transactions per minute and $100k usd value transferred per minute. I could find the same for other feature light blockchains like Monero, BCH, and Stellar. They all do so little, but users flock to them compared to Ardor. New features aside, when might I expect Ardor users to be logging more volume? Even 1 transaction and $1000 usd of value per minute would be a huge improvement. I will hold and check back after a few months. If Ardor drops in half again, I guess I'll buy 20% more again.
